1)What substances can sniffer dogs detect thereby improving security?

Three substances / compounds are smelled and trained on to ensure that these are always caught by the dogs.

1) RDX

2) Trinitrotoluene

3) Gunpowder

The sniffer dogs are well trained and experienced in recognizing these scents. They will always be accompanied with a trained handler.

2) What is the duration of period that sniffer dogs can work for without interruption?

Generally Sniffer dogs can work for a period of 4-15 hours without interruption. Generally a 20 minute rest is given when the dog is not performing duties at its peak. 8-10 hours is generally what dogs can work for during one day.

3) How do we ensure that the dogs are trained and can recognize scents/ substances / compounds correctly ?

We always give a demo to the administrative staff before the event, showcasing the skills and training of the dog being managed by the dog handler. Such demonstrations help us also get confidence of our own training and skills imparted over a period of 2-3 years to the sniffer dog.

4) Who takes responsibility of dog behaviour and veterinary services?

Sniffer dogs are the finest dog breeds that have been meticulously trained and cared for before bringing them for any security work. Sniffer dogs don’t disobey handler orders. At least we have never encountered any such situation and are reasonably confident that such a situation shouldn’t arise under any circumstance.

The dog handling team carries basic first aid for dogs with all required medicines and supplements if required. In case there is a dog emergency, we generally take the dog to veterinary and arrange for alternative dog security for the event.

5) How to find lost parent/ relative or even a small lost puppy using a sniffer dog ?
